At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Addresses letter "My Dear Son." Place not listed, but based on prior letters likely written from Kingston, Ohio. Discusses the harvesting going on and compliments Grier on his hard work. Expects the grain to be cut by the end of the week. Comments on the shortage of hands available for the harvest. Remarks the corn, potatoes, and oats are all in good shape. Expresses relief that he will send money home, as the interest is due; but cautions if he needs it they will make do. Refers to a family friend coming home from the war who says, "I have seen so much of this cruel war that I feel depressed in spirits and somewhat downhearted..." Reports Bell has finished her school and gone home. Letter continues the following day. Includes a 3 cent stamp on the envelope.

Joseph Maitland enlisted on 8 August 1862 as a Private. He was mustered into "G" Co. OH 95th Infantry. He was mustered out 31 May 1865 at Memphis, Tennessee.
