Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Begins letter to his wife with a long ramble about love, "I write you not as one with out hope for as long as thare is life thare is hope that we may se each others faces again on earth for my faith is yet strong though my body is week yet through love am I strong to see my loved ones at home and I wish that my love would sing and learn my children to sing as I have heard them sing in my sleep a few nights ago..." Gives his opinion on the poor care that the sick and wounded soldiers receive. "For they write home of them that die here of haveing the best of attension and care when they think that a soldier is agoing to die they moove him out back of the hospittal tent and leve him thare a lone to die and occasionly go out to see if he is dead...keep this your self..." Letter addressed to Mary M. Bogart, Masonville, Delaware County, New York.

Abram Bogart enlisted on 15 August 1862 at Sidney, New York as a Private. He was mustered into "I" Co. NY 144th Infantry. He was transferred from "I" Co. into "K" Co. on 16 October 1862. He was mustered out on 25 June 1865 at Hilton Head, South Carolina.
