Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks Watmough to pay Henry F. McSherry $50 "on my account." Signed by Kershner as an assistant surgeon in the U.S. Navy. Water stained and faded. Envelope at the back of the 3rd of 6 folders for this group. Envelope has postmark of 11 April 1865 in London, along with another on the back of the envelope dated 5 June 1866 from Hong Kong. Address says to send it "Via Marseilles."
