At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter in reference to Henry McSherry's attempts to find a job by pulling strings. Written by Bartow to the surgeon Maccinow (his name might be misspelled, the handwriting is not clear) in Baltimore. References Maccinow's letter of 11 April. Says the decisions involving the issuing of work was stopped by "the Bureau," and that he has learned that jobs will only be issued to those of "certain classes." Tells him to inform Dr. Henry McSherry to apply to Dr. Whelan for work.
