Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked that it was written from "Vermont - after dinner," probably referring to the USS "Vermont." Thanks McSherry for his note of that morning and says that he has seen nothing of the requisitions he requested. Says he sent a request to him this morning, but never received a reply. Wants to know if McSherry can fill in for him on board the ship from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
