Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Condolence letter for the death of Charles Woolston, a soldier in the 3rd regiment, Pennsylvania Cavalry who died of bronchitis and typhoid fever on 11 June 1865. Possibly written to Maria Woolston, Charles' mother. Expresses her sorrow at his death and at this "crul war" that also killed her brother.
