Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Hand delivered by Major Calhoun Benham who is on his way to Sonora, Mexico. Hopes that Cripps can assist Benham in his travel plans. Adds that Benham has seen some fantastic action in the Civil War and being a great storyteller, Edmondston encourages Cripps to inquire as to those experiences. Written on Office Inspector Field Transportation letterhead.

Cripps was General Gadsden's Secretary and a sawyer by profession.
