Writes of his regiment being ordered back to Newbern as soon as transportation can be arrived. Looks forward to going to a city and being able to read about the battle in a newspaper.
April 28, 1862 We are sending a hand car to Newbern with dispatch from Gen] Parke & it offers a chance of sending letters too good to be lost. I am getting along nicely & expect to be with my Co. in a day or two. The coln. ditto. we are (the 8th) are ordered to Newbern immediately that is as soon as transportation is provided, in a few days. I am rather pleased as we shall know something that is gong on if there, can get paper (the Progress) & perhaps find something to eat ^& have to pay for it too^ that we shant have here. I shall miss the fish we have here. I was expecting to feast on them when I got well enough. I shall probably see that sergeant by whom you talked of sending my things & so perhaps save them. Then Newbern is Express head - qts & I shall get my trunk all the sooner. The 8th did not take possession of the fort, we never get what is really due us & that was by all odds. Send trunk as soon as possible. Much love Chas I sit in Coln room & write until car starts. I did not mention the other day that Joe Greene was over in the fort while we were & played the "star spangled Banner" on his bugle standing just under the flag that had been so lately raised. T'was nice. I cant think what I want to write. A box came to Hospital directed to Dr. Lathrop & in it was quite a large tin box with farina, arrowroot, & cookies, was that mine. I thought not. Do write particularly in what way you send & when you send. Dr. Storrs gave me two nice pairs of wollen socks mine need mending & I was looking at them the day after I wrote you & I found several pairs are missing, perhaps C.B. knows where they are I can darn the others when I get the needle case so I am very well supplied yet if this reaches you in time I should not object to a pair or two of their woollen socks for summer. Lt. Shepard goes to N - with the dispatches so I take charge tomorrow of Co. B but probably shall not ^ need to^ leave my room. good bye
