This letter was written by the Headquarters Provost Marshal to certify that Ellen Coit was allowed to travel to visit her brother at Chesapeake Hospital.

New Haven, Nov. 2d, 1864
This will certify that Miss Ellen Coit the bearer of this is a lady of high social position and strictly loyal character, And that any favor which may be accorded her in the furtherance of
her intention of visiting Hampton, Va will not be misused. Miss Coit desires to visit Chesapeake Hosp. Hampton, Va for the purpose of seeing her brother, major Coit who is at that Hosp wounded.
