Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He has just arrived in New York from Richmond and expects to reach New Haven very soon. He plans to see his Uncle William in Brooklyn.

Just arrived direct from Richmond and shall be with you in New Haven tomorrow night or Monday. Tomorrow shall collect my transportation from the Quartermaster buy some clothes, go over to Brooklyn to see uncle wm, &c & if I succeed in every thing shall take a late train for N. Haven
