At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One bound volume that includes messages by and reports to Governors John Letcher and William Smith. From a variety of departments including: messages of the Governor, report of the board of visitors of the Virginia Military Institute, report relative to the returns of elections, papers relative to the recent call for slaves to work on fortifications, report of the editor of public accounts, report of the board of public works, report of the superintendent of the penitentiary, report of purchases of raw materials for the penitentiary, report on public library, the transmission of documents from Georgia, reports from General Cooper and Dimmock, report on abolishing the office of paymaster, communication from the auditing board on clothing, report on banking and currency, report on taxes, and report on contested election in Halifax County. They cover the special legislative session beginning 7 September 1863 and the second regular legislative session of 7 December 1863. Each report is separately paginated, some report numbers are repeated (Special Session has two Doc. no. 9, and Regular Session has three Doc. no. 15). See collateral file.
