At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Three volumes of letterpress copies of letters written by Tindall. First volume contains mostly letters written as assistant superintendent for the railroad in Dunkirk, New York, from November 1861 until May 1864, though many of these were written from Buffalo, New York. The end of the first volume, all of the second, and most of the third contain letters written as general agent for the United States military railroad in Chattanooga, Tennessee, from July 1864 through November 1864. End of the third volume contains letters written while railroad superintendent in Louisville in January 1865 and February 1865. Almost all letters are work related, few personal. Subjects include monthly cost statements, movement of military railroad from Chattanooga to Atlanta, and other railroad related business. Personal letters include insights on Southern life. Second volume on yellow carbon paper. Front of each volume contains an index of all correspondents and pages on which their letters appear.
