Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mentions that he is pleased that the United States District Attorney will not be reappointed and advises that it might be better to wait to remove him until his term ends. Recommends his son-in-law James Mason Campbell for an appointment as district attorney. States that he has written to the President, James K. Polk, and the Secretary of State about this issue as well. Informs that the District Judge is also in favor of Campbell being appointed. Marked private in upper left corner.

Mason served as United States Attorney General in James K. Polk's cabinet 1845-1846. Taney served as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court 1836-1864.
