Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Introduces Colonel Arthur P. Hayne of South Carolina.

Mason served as United States Attorney General in James K. Polk's cabinet 1845-1846. Taney served as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court 1836-1864. Hayne served in the War of 1812 and was later elected to the United States Senate in 1858.
