Taft's Supreme Court appointees; dining with Col. Charles Francis Adams.

Dear Sam:
I suppose you are not in Lynchburg. I want you to see Judge McDowell about his getting promoted to the Supreme Court. Taft will have several appointments or three or four judges must retire ? out of age. The South has no representative there & I really don't know any Southern Republican fit for the position except Judge McDowell. Mr. Taft must either appoint a Democrat or McDowell. I have a strong desire for his appointment (1) because his home is in Virginia & (2) because he is a grandson of Henry Clay. I dined Saturday with Col. Chas. Francis Adams. He is spending the winter here with his family. He was in Virginia during the war - commanded the first Massachusetts Cavalry. Remember me to Stockton & my cousins.
Yours Truly
