Dear Sam:
Here with a letter just recd. from Judge McDowell; please return it. I sent him a copy of the letter I mailed you some days ago. You see he says he wants you to publish it but I do not want it published. I don't care, however how many you show it to, including Conrad. From the Session Convention his father voted against the ordinance of secession in company with John Baldwin, A. H. H. Stewart & Jabal Early. They thought there was of course to justify secession. The comp. Says there was Conrad was in the L? Dept: some years ago (I suppose he was forced in.) his brother Holmes was here in the Dept: of Justice. I suppose that he too was forced in. You know the Comp says this is a government of "force" & they have to submit. I sent Col: William a copy. Ask Hugh if he wd. Not like to be "forced" into office.

Yours Truly
