Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Congratulatory special order to his troops after two victorious battles. Praises his men extensively for their valor at the Battle of Mansfield, Louisiana on 8 April, and Pleasant Hill, Louisiana on 9 April. Lists prisoners taken and equipment captured. Rallies the men to stay strong as there is still more work to be done.
