Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Venable, aid to General Robert E. Lee, instructs Horn to destroy a bridge and make his way to Amelia Court House.

Written five days before Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House.

Genl. Lee desires you to destroy the bridge at Bevel’s at once. Give warning to all [text loss: stragg]lers from various commands on this side, to come up & cross at Goode’s & make their way in direction of Amelia C.H. After you destroy the [text loss: b]ridge you can leave a vidette of three men at the place who will come in tonight. You will bring the [text loss: re]st of your command up [text loss: as] soon as you destroy the bridge & cross Goodes bridge [text loss: and] proceed to your command on the other side - Bring up with you all the stragglers you have collected or find on the way…Let the videttes be instructed if they see any of our men over the other side seeking their command to direct them to Amelia CH.
