At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Knox as Secretary of War to Colonel Walker. Says he delivered Madam le Val the deed with the original names of the person holding the escrow. Says Walker still needs to sign it and that the deed is lodged in the bank. Encloses a letter for Mr. Duer, probably William Duer (not included). Asks that Walker reads it and to obtain the statement from Duer that it requests.

My dear Walker
I yesterday delivered Madam le Val the deed, with the original names of the persons holding the escrow, to wit Richard Peters John Kean, and John Vaughan. But your name is yet necessary for own security to the escrow which I have promised that you should sign.
The deed is lodged in the bank.
The enclosed is to Mr Duer relatively to my being [illegible] for him- read it, and endeavor my dear Walker to obtain the statement required- Seal it before you deliver it - and inform me
