Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed in type by President Young and Clerk Willard Richards. A letter narrating Mormon history from their expulsion from Illinois in 1846 until their settlement in Utah and their founding of Salt Lake City. Invites like-minded people in the British Isles and throughout the world to join them on the east side of the Missouri River to trek together to Utah. According to records at Brigham Young University this pamphlet was printed in St. Louis, Missouri, before the middle of January 1848.
