Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written from camp near Falmouth, Virginia. Ames, Colonel of the 20th Regiment, Maine Infantry. Requests to be relieved from further duty as Assistant Commissary of Musters for his division. Reports that his duties as a mustering officer greatly interfere with his duties as Regimental Commander. To Estes as Acting Assistant Adjutant General, 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 5th Corps, Army of the Potomac.

Ames served as a United States Senator from Mississippi 1869-1874, and Governor of Mississippi 1874-1876.
