Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Clothing issued by Captain D. E. Straight. Includes the names of 39 soldiers, all of whom signed with an "x." Signed by James F. Essex as a witness.

Straight enlisted in the Union Army on 6 August 1862 as a Corporal and was mustered into "E" Co. IL 129th Infantry on 8 September 1862. He was promoted to Captain on 1 August 1864 and commissioned into US CT 100th Infantry. He was mustered out on 26 December 1865.
