Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Chromolithographed oval bust portrait of Lincoln surrounded by a wreath, with dove of peace at top and "Justice, Liberty, Equality" on tri-color ribbon at bottom. Printed with caption "Abraham Lincoln, sixteenth President of the United States. Born February 12, 1809. Died April 15, 1865." Two publishers listed: E.B. & E.C. Kellogg of Hartford, CT and F.P. Whiting of New York.
