Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Circular letter, lacking the act of Congress. Trimmed on right edge, with some loss of text. One bust engraving of Washington included.

Notes: Unpublished. In 1783 George Walton became chief justice of the state superior court. In 1789 Walton was elected as governor of Georgia. In 1795 he was appointed to fill unexpired term as US Senator.
