Caffrey is ill. He discusses friends who have joined the Mexican War and voices his displeasure with the conflict. He hopes to travel to Spain someday.

Excerpt:
I am sorry to hear that G. the General et al of our friends have gone to look for glory and gold...Poor fellows they think to behold 'Glory Smiling in Danger's Gorgon Face' and to see Mexican dollars and doubloons growing on every branch of the Mexican cactus....
Since my disapointment in carving out with my sword a name upon the bloody fields of Mexico, I have been doing a little of nothing...."

Gibson, Randall Lee, 1832-1892
