Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This letter is about opposing strategies of different generals

Haviland Gifford enlisted 22 January 1862 at Albany, New York, as a 1st Lieutenant. On that date, he was commissioned into Field & Staff NY 93rd Infantry. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 3 February 1865, and was mustered out on 29 June 1865 at Washington, D.C.
