Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Includes a letter for Maury to forward to the Collector (of Customs in New York). Failed to get the endorsement of any cabinet members because they are too busy, and presumes that if they knew the vacancy existed they would want to fill it with their own people. Admiral Porter was a former Union naval commander and superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy.
