Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Published by Weeks, Jordan and Company. There is a lithograph and a letterpress titlepage. The frontispiece is an engraved map of New York City (NY edition only?). There are folding maps inserted for the country between pp. 16-17. Every state has a map as do the cities of Boston, Philadelphia, New York and Baltimore. The Republic of Texas has its own map. The historical section digests American history from the settlement.
