At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A rough draft of the Wade-Davis Bill, passed by the House of Representatives 4 May 1864. Changes noted throughout this document in ink. Docketed by H. R. U. L., an enrolling clerk. Docket states "2nd July 1864-- This is in the precise shape it was presented to President Lincoln." Accompanied by a fragment of string.

President Lincoln refused to sign the Wade-Davis Bill 4 July 1864, after the Senate and House of Representatives had agreed to its passage.
