Dear Sir
Enclosed, please find one hundred dollars, which you will place to my credit as a subscriber for "Avalanche." I wish to pay for in advance until this amount is absorbed. Continue as now directed to my son Andrew Johnson, Jr. If any additional expense has been incurred during the canvas on my account, which has not been paid, you will be pleased to forward to me the account for me to payment. I intended to have visited Memphis before this time, (but family afflictions have prevented me from doing so), and have tendered to you in person sincere ackknowledgements for the valauble services you rendered the country during the late campaign; they are now appreciated by all excpet a few extremists, as essentially contributing to the emancipation of the people of the State from the military secession combination, which I trust is forever broken and the peopel relieved from their tyrranical and wicked rule.
