Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Authored by Lieutenant P.H. Ray of the Eighth U.S. Infantry, A.S.O., Commanding Expedition, Chief Signal Officer, United States Army, under the auspice of the International Polar Expedition, 1882-1883. Published by the Government Printing Office. Titlepage signed by George Davidson on 5 December 1885. Davidson was a geodesist, geographer, astronomer who served with U.S. Coast Survey from 1845-1895. Illustrated with color and duotone lithographs.
