Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A copy of a photographic portrait of Philip Henry Sheridan. A bust showing shoulder and head, Sheridan is wearing the uniform of a Union Army General Officer and his rank is shown as Major General (two stars on shoulder straps). Philip Henry Sheridan was promoted from brigadier to major general following his performance in the battles of Perryville [October 8th, 1862] and Stones River [December 31st, 1862 to January 2nd, 1863]. Promoted to Liutenant General on March 4th, 1869.
