Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of a group of commissioned and noncommissioned officers of the 1st Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, taken in August of 1864. The soldier standing in the second row on the far left wears a diamond emblem on the upper part of his sleeve that resembles the diamond badge that is part of a first sergeants rank [the inverted chevrons are missing, however]. Graphite inscription on verso: "Gardner XI-II 354."
