Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Negative by J. Reekie. Taken from Gardner's "Photographic Sketchbook, Vol II. No. 72" with text accompanying panel. Also includes text description page. The well-known supply steamer, "Planter," is in the center of the photograph. The opposite bank of the river forms a part of "Bermuda Hundreds, occupied by Gen Butler after the failure of his advance on Richmond.
