Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of an upper-body portrait of then-Colonel Peter J. Osterhaus. Taken by Bernhard Kihlholz of St. Louis, Missouri, with blind stamp. Osterhaus would become a major-general by war's end. Written on back: "Act. Brig. General Osterhaus"

Date must be between start of war when he was appointed major and June 9, 1862 when he was promoted to brigadier general.
