Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of a sutler's tent at the Army of the Potomac headquarters. Four men, including two sergeants, stand in front opening of tent speaking to someone inside the tent. Nine additional men are posed in the rear if the tent. One of them sits in a tree. Inscription on verso: "Sutlers tent Gardner VIII 216."
