Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Title taken from printed text on recto and pencil inscription. Pencil inscription also reads: "Petersburg Campaign June [18]64 - May [18]65." Shows a number of Federal soldiers [probably engineers] posed on the bridge which stretches across the river directly up the center of the image. Imprint on the verso blacked out. Graphite inscription on verso: "Campfire and Battlefield p. 364."
