Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Tree lined street. The navy department building is visible behind the line of trees. Inscription on verso: "Navy Dept. West and North." An additional inscription "not this" is partially trimmed off. The building in the photograph matches a different image of the building in CWTI Photographic History of the Civil War. Vol. 2: 894.
