Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The men are looking at their plates. The table has been set with white dishes and the servant holds a white pitcher. The tent is in the woods. A second tent is located to the rear and left of the main scene. Inscription on verso: "Genl. Ordway Gardner Coll." Numeric notation: "132 XI" (or IX).
