Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Both men wear knee high boots. Two horses are visible in the background. The man on the left sits on a box while the man on the right sits in a camp chair. Possibly scouts? The Library of Congress labeled the image as two men: "discussing the probabilities of the next advance." Inscription on verso: "Genl. Ordway Gardner Coll." Numeric notation: "175 XXXV."
