Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Full plate collodion negative, cracked along the center, with spacer to prevent abrasion. Previously framed, a typed note in the frame (transcribing an inscription in the negative) read: "Admiral David Dixon Porter. Commander Mississippi River Fleet and Mobile Bay, 1863-1864... Brady Negative." This negative is Ex-Hardy and Ex-Meredith. LIMITED USE: USE COPY PRINT.
