Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Carte de visite negative. Crawford elegantly dressed as a civilian, standing with one foot forward and hand draped over a stand. Crawford served as a colonel in the 3d Ga. Inf. C.S.A. He also served as Confederate Commissioner to Washington, and was a member of the Provisional Congress from Georgia. "Original collodion negative by M.B. Brady."
