Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Washed out image of the bare, rocky western face of Little Round Top. In the right foreground is the Slaughter Pen, denoted by the large boulders and Plum Run ["Bloody Run"] in the extreme right bottom corner. Inscription on verso: "Gardner." Frassanito identifies the photograph as O'Sullivan's. Numeric notation on verso: "319"; "XX 319"; and "VII."
