Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows a line of sharpened posts that constitute the outer stockade, running along the base of the wall. The stockade reflects the damage it suffered in the Federal taking of the fort. Three mounds of sand and two cannons are visible. Inscription on verso: "Gardner." Numeric notations on verso "XXII" and "572."
