Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows a long line of sharpened posts that constitute the outer stockade. A group of Federal soldiers stand behind the stockade on a mound on the left side of the image. Three cannons are visible, one in between each of the highest mounds. Debris is strewn across the foreground. Inscription on verso: "Ordway Gardner Coll." Numeric notation on verso: "XXII."
