Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows a large building with men on a wrap-around porch and at the entrance. Inscription on verso: "Quartermasters Office Fortress Monroe Dec 64" and "Gardner." Numeric notations on verso: "XXXIII"; "418"; "418." Additional notations: "419" and "49" have been struck.
