Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The Zouaves form two rows, one standing and the other sitting or kneeling. Two officers sit on either side in the first row on tree stumps. The man seated in the first line at the far left has a drum between his knees. There is a tent on the left side of the image, and a canopy of tree libms bin the background. Inscription on verso: "Ordway Gardner Coll."
