Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows a single horse in the foreground with Sibley tents behind, and a cluster of buildings on top of a hill, which includes the headquarters for Colonel C.R. Lowell's cavalry. Inscription on verso: "Hd. Qrs. Lowell's Cavalry Brigade, Vienna Va. Feb. 1864 (The large house in the centre is Col. C.R. Lowell's hd. qrs.)"
