Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows three steamboats full of people docked at a levee. Several buildings occupy the foreground. Inscriptions on verso: "The levee at Vicksburg, Miss., Feb., 1864" "Eve Post mag. wanted July 25 3 PM" and "4 in square no rule." Numeric notation on verso: "137." Stamp of the Frederick H.
