Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows General Emory seated in his Union uniform. His body is turned to the right, but he is looking directly at the camera. Inscription on recto: "Conly Boston." Inscriptions on verso: "Maj. Gen. W. H. Emory" and "C.F. Conly 465 Washington St. Boston, Mass. Negatives Preserved Duplicated Can Be Had At Any Time. Enlargements in Ink or Crayon. Porcelain Lenographs a Specialty."
